How I Got Started In Welding and Fabrication
Walking home from school one Tuesday afternoon, an eighth grader noticed a “For Sale” sign on a dusty blue three-door hatchback in his neighborhood. The car was a 1988 Dodge Colt. The eighth grader didn’t see a dusty blue Dodge Colt, though. He saw a race car.
The boy grew up in Detroit, the birthplace of America’s auto industry, surrounded by steel and a shared love of cars with a father who worked for Chrysler. The garage was full of tools, equipment and an endless stream of projects to work on. Most of his youth was spent learning how to work with metal in that garage.
I’m Joe Godin, founder and principal of Ranch Road Fabrication. I was that boy. My dad and I rebuilt the suspension, added roll-cage construction and raced that Dodge Colt into the ground. I started welding because of cars.
I started welding at the age of twelve and never stopped.
After serving our country in the Marines*, I returned to Michigan and opened a full service metal shop with the slogan “That’s What We Do Here” before moving to Texas in 2003. I took a break from the welding torch working for a local homebuilder doing project management. My construction knowledge grew and the experience sharpened two overlooked and underserved skills:
- clear and linear communication
- focused listening
The expanding development and construction in the Austin area needed trustworthy, knowledgable and organized metal fabricators who know how to listen and communicate. I started R²F to meet this need.
R²F’s principles of operation are:
- collaborative communication
2018 marks my 30th anniversary of welding and making. Thank you for reading my story.
